VIRGIN have just announced a competition to win, we never take your details, so we are just giving you the link. Virgin’s ship is now claiming 2,750-passengers, and The Scarlet Lady, based in Miami, will be off to Havana Cuba and then sail the Caribbean. On land they will tour Old Havana, offer dancing at a salsa club, explore the architecture, and interact with locals. Details are scarce but, more on shore excursions will be announced next year and will be in line with U.S. guidelines that govern travel to the island.
You will see they are to have a small Tattoo Studio onboard, because INK is all the rage and it started at sea with sailors being tattoo’d. Tattoos were believed to have the power to shield them against the dangers at sea. A pig and a rooster emblazoned on each foot were viewed as protection from drowning (pigs and roosters were frequently the only survivors of a shipwreck).
Virgin suggests some may wish to remember their voyage with a tattoo, and let’s face it, there walks away a permanent advert. Virgin has always been great at spreading the word. The first electric tattoo machine is claimed to have come from Samuel O’Reilly in the USA. His studio in New York City opened in 1875. “an American sailor without a tattoo is like a ship without grog — not seaworthy,” he would say.
