MSC CRUISES – THE FLEET

Mediterranean Shipping Company moves ships around the ocean day and night, over 500, though mostly carrying cargo and containers. They are a major Cruise operator. Few cruise brands have 19 ships in one brand name, and 10 more in production. Since entering the Cruise Ship industry they have grown and are soon to add smaller ships and a luxury yacht class with more than just a 24 hr butler and privacy. See below.

LIRICA CLASS is the MSC smaller ship, all four have been cut in half and extended to hold around 2,500 guests which makes them about the size of the Arcadia, but nothing like it in comparison.

Lyrica Class ships are bigger than the Oceana and Queen Victoria type ships, more the size of the Arcadia but any comparison stops there. They are a development or sub class of the Mistral Class built at Chantiers de l’Atlantique, St. Nazaire, France. The Lirica class goes up to about 250 meters in length, over 2,000 passengers on 9 passenger decks. (13 total)

These ships are more fun and family and less conservative than many UK used ships. Perhaps a little more like the Princess brand, but essentially a European ship though aimed at the US and rest of the world market. Though these are family ships, with children areas redesigned by Lego as well as others, they are quieter than the larger ships.

MUSICA CLASS is the mid size MSC ship, all four have similar features and host around 3,000 guests which makes them about the size of the Ruby Princess or Azura but the comparison ends there.

Musica Class ships are similar in size to the Ventura and Ruby Princess. These ships are fun and family and perhaps less conservative than many UK used ships. Perhaps a little more like the Princess brand, but essentially a European ship though aimed at the US and rest of the world market. Don’t be fooled by the lack of being able to find a dress code, these ships get dressy. MSC suggest taking a tux for formal nights.

FANTASIA CLASS is the upper-mid size MSC ship, similar in size to the Britannia holding over 3,500 guests and being well featured family ships.

Fantasia Class ships are similar in size to the Britannia. Whilst the Britannia is currently the largest ship at P&O (for another year, two larger ships are ordered) the Fantasia Class is just the upper mid size at MSC. As the name suggests they were designed for families, and to them that means keeping the kids happy, as well as the rest of the family whatever the generation. MSC is for families that cruise together. These ships are more fun and family and less conservative than many UK used ships. Perhaps a little more like the Princess brand, but essentially a European ship though aimed at the US and rest of the world market.

BIG SHIPS come in two classes. MERAVIGLIA CLASS and SEASIDE CLASS these ships are big and there are slight differences in design. These start at 4,500 guests and go to 6,000

Meraviglia Class ships are big, with around 5,000 guests. This is the size of the two new P&O ships on order. The Meraviglia Plus class, goes to over 6,200 guests.

The Seaside Class of ships are bigger and aimed at the beach lovers and essentially based out of Miami and the Florida coast for the Caribbean market.

These ships are fun and family. Don’t be fooled by the lack of being able to find a dress code, these ships get dressy. MSC suggest taking a tux for formal nights.

About Us

Doris Visits is just a little hobby, and a way of helping people research ports and ships. It is our way of giving back as we are on the ships between 6 and 12 times a year as Guest Lecturers. The site is also supported by other guest lecturers.

Why Doris? It was a character Jean played in a TV show and we started the port guides as a little spin-off. It took over. I mean, rode into town and said this is it.

Who is Jean? Jean is a West End and Broadway actress who now has her own one woman show called Royal Mistresses, which she performs at guilds and on ships. Hence, she cruises – a bit. She now presents TV and is known by many cruisers for her Doris Visits port guides.

Who is Stuart? Featured in a clip in the 2024 Oscars – in the tribute to movie stuntmen – he was the Queen Alien in Aliens. Now, he points the iPhone at Jean when they go and explore ashore. He finished in movies as a director, and now writes cruise thrillers.

The grandchildren who sometimes travel and from their son Luke Aikman. He was the young Colin Firth in Fever Pitch and appeared in Freight. He is now a producer and business entrepreneur. Their daughter helped with the plot of the first four novels and is now writing with comedian Joe Wilkinson. Laura Aikman is known for being the girlfriend in the Christmas Gavin and Stacey, and Dyan Cannon in Archie. Some grew up with her Saturday show, Mysti.
