Kotor in Montenegro is more like a Fjord than an Adriatic beach

Kotor will surprise you, because whatever you are expecting it will not be a Fjord with an hour long sail in. The UNESCO World Heritage site is a tiny fortified town hidden inside Montenegro’s Adriatic coast. The entrance is via a long Ria, which looks like a Fjord, that does get narrow before opening up to something you will be familiar with seeing in Scandinavia. The water in the bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovćen is flat and calm. It is more likely you will see it on the way in because the sail out may be dark.

The walled city is just steps from your ship, and features winding streets and squares that offer a welcome shade. Its history is mixed and much fault over but the medieval old town is left with several Romanesque churches since that invasion. These include the Kotor Cathedral which has a photo opportunity upper balcony over the square. It also houses a small museum to add to the interest for the small entrance fee. Our film shows you inside. Its has other museums and a growing number of tourist attractions, as well as a small bazaar. The city wall climbs up the mountain – we didn’t.

It was ruled by the Venetians, so the Venetian Lion can be seen everywhere, including above the gates that give entrance to the old city. It was then known a Cattaro or Catturo before the Slovenian name Kotor. The Habsburgs and then the Turks or Ottermans did not change the name when they invaded, and it has become Kotor. One day is enough to see this city, there is a small pebble beach a walk in the other direction, and it will no-doubt draw you back.
