Blue Party on Cruise Days in Blue Port Hamburg

The port of Hamburg shines in blue and together everyone waves at the cruise ships. There are over 9,000 lighting elements, at the festival and new features are always joining. The port shimmers in blue and makes for a party atmosphere or a romantic harbour walk. For us, it was an exceptional sail away.

One week in the year is the week of Blue Party when everyone is invited to wave at the cruise ships that join in by parking in the middle of the Elbe and lighting up blue. Up to five ships have sat together being held in position by their modern satellite positioning autopilots.

If a ship is being Christened at the Blue Party, there are also blue fireworks. As cruising returned after a global shutdown, the Queen Mary 2 sounded her horn and started the eighth festival on the 19th of August 2022 and Doris Visits was invited to be on board. The following Blue Port will take place the year after from September 08th to 10th.

Blue Port is the work of light-artist Michael Batz. Since 2008, his “Blue Port Hamburg” art project has shown Hamburg Harbour in many different versions of blue. Many ships form a flotilla of blue around the featured ship, this year the QM2, and the light sources on land start at the riverside footpaths and docks and range back to include featured buildings, public lighting fairs and bridges.

During the day, the festival has drink stands and large German BBQ wheels, as well as marketing tents of cruise lines from Cunard to Star Clippers. Michael Otremba, Managing Director of Hamburg Tourist Board, says: “The demand from many cruise enthusiasts and from the travel industry for the Hamburg Cruise Days is high. This underscores the existing longing for Hamburg and the special atmosphere in the port at Hamburg Cruise Days.” There were also sailing cruise ships there including the Sea Cloud Spirit, and other ships that have been in the parade include Mein Schiff 3, MS EUROPA and MSC Preziosa’

It is not just the clubs and bars, the docks and industry join in. The maritime mile, a diverse urban area also characterized by logistics and industry, is illuminated by beautiful blue light.

We would have loved to have stayed for the second night, when the lighting is joined by a drone display and music, with two large ships the AIDAprima and MSC Magnifica taking centre stage, between the Elbphilharmonie and the Landungsbrücken for an evening of images of dancing lightness.

Following this Jean was shown around Hamburg, by Hamburg Greeter Gordon Drane.
