What to do in Nosy Be, Madagascar

Nosy Be is the busiest tourist area in Madagascar. David Attenborough enjoys the unique wildlife here.It is home to many weird and wonderful animals, a lot of which cannot be found anywhere else on earth. It also has amazing beaches and snorkelling. The Lokobe reserve is the last remaining primary forest in the region, and home to the endangered black lemur. It is easy to find a local guide who can show you the way to the reserve, which is through the picturesque village of Ampasipohy. Here the local market has handmade goods and colourful fabrics, and the smell of spices fills the air.

The locals will point you to the perfect sunset spot, which is at the now-extinct volcano. At Mont Passot small craters and lakes have crocodiles and freshwater fish. There are 4 to 6kms hikes; the longest is the Amparihibe which has orchid alleys, sacred lakes, and ylang-ylang plantations.

Antsahamanavaka offers teak forests and waterfalls. Antsidihy area is ideal for birdwatchers.

In May and June music acts from Mauritius, Réunion, Rodrigues, and Comoros arrive for the four-day Donia music festival. Creole, reggae, rock, and pop is a celebration of the Indian Ocean cultures.
