What to do in Port Louis, Mauritius

The most beautiful paradise island. Although known for its French colonial architecture, it is not a French territory, unlike its close neighbour Reunion. The port and capital is not an example of how wonderful the island is, nor a place you would want to spend your holiday.  The new La Cauldron Waterfront is cosmopolitan and has many cafes with views of the harbour but you are better with a tour either north or south. In the city there are the ruins of the Aapravasi Ghat, an immigration depot created in 1849. As many as 1,000 men, women and children went through processing at a time.

Jummah Mosque, the Kaylasson Temple and the Blue Penny Museum which features the island’s colonial and maritime history, might be amongst things to see. The island is so beautiful we suggest you try and see it whether North, South, to the beaches or in search of wildlife. Some of the coast is private and owned by resorts, other beaches are public, all are splendid.

The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, and Reunion form part of the Mascarene Islands but there fall under different rule, just like Comoros.

We list these not to sell you the tours, though Get Your Guide do have many excellent private guides and tour options, but, reading through what the locals offer you at a destination, reveals what is there. Local tours (allow time to load) as shown by GET YOUR GUIDE. Always remember a ship tour offers the protection of waiting for the trip to return if it is running late.
