Ponta Delgada, Azores. São Brás Fort Military Fort and Museum

Forts are a stable diet in the Caribbean, as islands were won in bloodshed and protected from the same. The São Brás Fort and military museum here only cost a few euros and it has guns and armoury from different conflicts through different generations. If you have an interest in the military and armoury then I think you will find this great value for money. If you don’t, the cost is minimal and it can be done very quickly. It is a small fort with good views of the harbour and your ship from the battlements. The other rooms are full of guns and weapons and some medical and hospital equipment used throughout the ages in times of conflict. Built in the 16th century to defend against pirate attacks, São Brás Fort was the most important fortress of all the existing fortresses in the city. It is strategically placed to the west of Ponta Delgada and there is a monument dedicated to the seamen who perished in World War I. This fort is now used by the Command of Azores Military Zone. It has been classified as a National Trust Building. The film below shows you some of the things you will find in the fort.

In another blog post on Ponta Delgada you will find the town and an interview with a scuba diving team and diving here is very good. Many sunken ships surround the Azores.
