William Shakespeare’s Stratford-On-Avon is a wonderful day out, and Jean and Stuart spend the day there. Not their first visit, but the favourite Midlands tourist spot does draw you back. Its quiet streets, timber-framed houses, and the gentle flow of the Avon are more than picturesque. Stratford reminds Jean how much of Britain’s richness lay beyond the obvious landmarks. For Jean, Stratford it wasn’t just a stopover; it was a place to pause, breathe, and reconnect with her actress roots before the sea called her again. Stuart stopped in Evesham and seen his BBC roots. But here, they both took a particular interest in the RSC theatre. Their daughter Laura, who won at the NTA’s this same week with Gavin and Stacey, will hopefully be able to schedule to work in something at the theatre one day. Laura is about to start filming the second series of This City Is Ours in Liverpool. Jean plays in the fun areas of the theatre that are open to all, like the costume museum and the tower. The theatre should not be missed, if for no other reason than the incredible staff who have so much knowledge of the place they love.
William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist, even though many now claim he borrow some of his inspiration from Greene and others. The Ben Elton series UPSTART CROW is a witty sit com series at the BBC that infers that and is a send-up of Shakespeare. The very clever writing and acting makes modern references that debunks the great man’s work. Shakespeare is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon” or simply “the Bard” and is brilliantly played by David Mitchell.
The 30 minute boat trip was taken to get a river view of the church where Shaespeare is buried, but Jean also walked there after the theatre to discover that the bust above his grave is the official image of the playwright from which almost all other images are taken. She explains.
Then, to end the day, she takes the ghostly walking tour, which is an entertaining collection of well performed stories.
