Done between two cruises, this fix cost less than a souvenir because we bought the part directly from China. To top it off, we fitted the brilliant Reverse Cam Wipe Brush for the Kia Niro—a gadget that wipes and cleans the reversing camera every time you use it.
Many presenters mock the establishment that exploits us—charging thousands of pounds for a five-dollar piece of electronics. Jean wasn’t about to hand over £1500 for a Kia repair.
So Stuart fixed it. It was so absurdly simple that we turned it into a comedy, roped in our mate Chesney Hawkes, and even added a cruise theme — because the money saved was more than the cost of a cruise. The film is funny, yes, but it also highlights the outrageous cost, the ridiculous repair, and the so-called “warranty.”

PITFALLS
Ordering the wrong camera is one. There are at least THREE versions the G5000, the G5100 and the G5500 and they all have different electronics in the same box, operating different firmware, that requires a different computer set up in the car. Various cars use these and our new 2022 Niro EV qqwas set up with a 2017 camera system at factory – why? Who knows. Maybe they had a few thousand older cameras to get out of stock. You must order the right camera or there is no way to make it work… online reviewers who claim their repair does not work, and experts suggesting resets do not know. It is a plug-and-play device and switch to a new correct version will have it working. A wrong version, none of the fixes will make it work.
WHY DOES IT GO WRONG?
KIA main dealers know there are a high level of faults and they don’t know why. It is a design fault, not technically or aesthetically, but operationally. If one has an up and over garage door, it sits above the car. When unloading shopping the car door may TOUCH the door (the new low roof of your garage) – whilst only touching , and even placed gently, and not banging – this is the contact that damages the camera. When up and open, the camera is the door stop.

Why did we make this comedy?
Our channel audience are cruisers. Many will have KIAS, some may save money. Plus, as old film makers we occasionally fancy doing something different – It is why I made movies like FREIGHT in 2010 on immigration, sex trafficking and sexual abuse. As film maker I thought I could see a future problem. I made DEVIL’S GATE which is a film about abuse in the home, because I could see an old problem. I made BULA QUO which was originally a film themed on organ harvesting, that was rewritten for the rock band Status Quo, and had Rick not then been too unwell to film, we would have made Namaste Quo in India, with Bangra rock… now you are asking why you asked. Luckily, I was in a financial position that what the industry remunerated me with, I could choose to do what I wanted… my daughter Laura has just produced her first project. LOL, it will take a while to get over the blows… Her husband Matt Kennard wrote and directed and I hope it looks as great as the stils from the shoot. Well done.
