Soviet Tallinn Museum, best seen here first

This might be one you are glad you saw here and avoided going to? Back in the 1960s the Soviet authorities decided that there was both huge revenue and foreigners on travel to be taken advantage of. The hotels had to attract foreigners, but be suitable for the KGB. In 1972 the Viru Hotel opened in Tallinn heralding the Soviet society development of Estonia. The hotel is a museum and is in their words, ‘a treasure trove of stories of two different worlds – one which existed mostly on paper, of happy Soviet citizens living in friendship and never wanting for anything, led by a wise, all-powerful group of men in a place where there were never any accidents or catastrophes; and the other real world, which was a very different and a much tougher place to live in’.

Access to the museum is available with a guided tour only and you are requested to book in advance. The tour is about one hour. You can enter the associated nightclub Cafe Amigo with your museum ticket on the same day.

We don’t often say negative things about anything here, but we couldn’t find many positive things. It is a bit like a tour by Basil Fawlty. Doris will not be going there to make our own film, so thanks to the wondering Englishman.
