Walvis Bay, Namibia

Many safaris are offered and there is an abundant bird life including flamingos, pelicans and Damara terns. Excursion-wise, Namibia is all about 4×4 drives in the sand dunes, and the flamboyance of pelicans, or is it flamingoes. Wildlife is limited to geckos, lizards, sidewinder snakes, and wild dogs. There are a few other larger animals, but they are scarce and there is no large game or cats.

The flamingos can be seen in many places without a tour. You can sit in The Raft and watch them – see film. By April winter is approaching and it gets cold, especially in the evening. Many birds fly north to breed.

The town has little offer, the people are friendly and they mix without any segregation and it claims to be the safest place in Africa. The dockside bars are hidden away but we show you the route, but we never found the fishing boats and that are supposed to keep the harbour interesting. At sea tours offer the chanced to see dolphins, whales and Cape fur seals that inhabit the Atlantic around the Pelican Point Lighthouse.

Surf the sand dunes at the start of the Namib desert, but the new Dune Shopping Mall won’t offer any surprises.

The promenade walk, and the Long Beach are charming and filled with and endless flamboyance of pink flamingos. Walvis is a lagoon has a small beach. Walking to Vambo Beach and Independence Beach, is a nice way to spend the day but use the toilet before you go. The Winchester Hotel is a great stop and the 4×4’s often meet in the car park opposite.

The town has little offer, the people are friendly and they mix without any segregation and it claims to be the safest place in Africa. For a more touristy place you will need to travel 30km north to Swakopmund. However, now the deep port is here in Walvis Bay, ships will visit, and tourism will grow.
