Why cruisers need to know about robots – meet Pepper

Both Aida and Costa cruise lines have introduced robots to assist guests, these Pepper robots are cruise ship specific and speak three languages. As both Aida and Costa are both Carnival lines, and robots can work 24/7 without getting emotional, we expect to see them across the fleet eventually which means P&O and Cunard too. These robots can show you around the ship, know what’s happening and what is on the menu, in fact, do many of the simple things you might have had to go to guest relations for. This is not a toy, it is a working part of the ship and the Costa Group were first to sign a robot agreement, worth more than a million euros, with the French company ALDEBARAN, a subsidiary of the SoftBank Group, for a pilot project with “Pepper” robots. Pepper is the world’s first robot that reads the main human emotions. He is ideally suited to help and delight guests on board of cruise ships. Pepper will improve the guest experience and provide help and entertainment onboard ships. Have your say on one of the Doris Visits chat sites. Costa was the first to introduce Pepper. “With an emotional robot onboard our cruise ships we are once again continuing our tradition of innovation. For us, this is an important step towards a digital future for our brands. I am confident that our guests will love Pepper,” said Michael Thamm, CEO of the Costa Group. For some time robots have been performing medical surgeries and doing other tasks, but interacting with humans has been a little slower. Alexa is perhaps the first step into having a robot at home, but it is very cheap and limited. The technology may have annoyed you on the phone, as Amelia technology can now replace hundreds of call centre robots and answer more questions more accurately to hundreds of callers at once. But, to be a dance host, a cruise ship guide, that is a step into the future that for now, might amuse, but within no time, will be an expected addition. These robots are expected to take over care of the elderly by the time we all get older, the big question is what purpose will humans have? PORT GUIDES – CANARY ISLAND MENU OF DESTINATION GUIDES     Pepper is well equipped with features and a high-level interface for communicating with those around him, to move fluidly and analyze expressions and voice tones using the latest advances in voice and emotion recognition. So, apart from being a dance host, running quizzes, might Pepper be taking you on excursions or sailing the ship… well, we already have sat nov and the world is talking of driverless cars.

  • Pepper is 120 cm and weighs 28 kg
  • 17 joints for graceful movements
  • 3 omnidirectional wheels to move with agility
  • 1 3D camera for detecting people and their movements and interact with them
  • A 10-inch touch screen

QUESTION: If I travel and I am more than 24 weeks pregnant am I technically un-insured and liable for all the bills?

ANSWER: Check with your insurance company and lawyer before you travel, but it appears all the companies say no travel.
