Isafjordur in the Westfjords region of Iceland – Jean Visits

Ísafjörður is a town in the Westfjords region of northwest Iceland. Like most of Iceland and many fjords, it has dramatic landscapes. Most houses are now concrete with corrugated iron cladding to protect them from the weather. In the old town, there are still a few old wooden houses with corrugated tin roofs. They were built by fishing merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. Tourism now challenges the old industries that can be seen in the West Fjord Museum in the docks which has a piano accordion collection, model boats and exhibits on the town’s maritime history. The old hospital, now a cultural centre, contains archives and photography. They are two separate museums. There is also a microbrewery or gastro pub that sells, as you might expect, fish and chips. We also found a candle-making shop in town.

If you wish to venture out, the Dynjandi waterfall is the biggest waterfall in the Westfjords and the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. In 1980 Dynjandi waterfall and its surroundings were declared a natural monument and now it is one of the most photographed sights in all of Iceland.

Ísafjörður is also the home of amazing Northern Lights, we have this on another blog.
